    San Alfonso del Mar

    Algarrobo, Chile

    The pool

Once the world's largest pool — a kilometre of crystal-clear seawater along Chile's Pacific coast.

San Alfonso del Mar held the Guinness record for the world's largest swimming pool for over a decade: a full kilometre long, holding 250 million litres of filtered Pacific seawater.

Sailboats glide across its turquoise surface while swimmers paddle along the edges. The temperature is kept far warmer than the cold Humboldt current just beyond the resort's seawall.
