The pool
A 1930s WPA-era saltwater pool on a working lavender farm in New Mexico's Rio Grande valley.
Los Poblanos was built in the 1930s as the country estate of Senator Albert Simms, designed by John Gaw Meem in his signature Pueblo Revival style. The pool dates from the same era — a long rectangle of clear blue water flanked by adobe walls, cottonwood trees, and rows of fragrant Grosso lavender.
The water is salt-chlorinated and the field beyond hums with bees through the summer. Swim a few laps, then walk the farm to the chickens and back for breakfast at the inn's restaurant, which grows most of what it serves.
