The pool
Sharp modernist villa pools cantilevered over the limestone cliffs of Bali's southern Bukit peninsula.
Alila Uluwatu was designed by WOHA as a study in honest materials — local limestone, recycled ironwood, raw concrete — perched on a 100-metre cliff above the Indian Ocean. The villa pools are long, narrow, and impossibly close to the edge, the water meeting the horizon in a single uninterrupted line.
Below, Uluwatu's famous left-hand reef break draws surfers from across the world; from the deck, they appear as small dark commas on the swell. Swim at sunset, when the cliff turns the colour of beaten gold.
